iOS 9 is the newest release of Apple’s operating system. iOS 9 comes with a bunch of powerful features and enhancements to improve your productivity and performance. We have been experimenting with some of the features embedded in this update and decided to share with what we think are the best things in iOS 9 for us in education.
1- Picture in Picture
While using FaceTime or watching a video, press the Home button and your video screen scales down to a corner of your display. Tap to open a second app, and your video continues to play — even while you use the other app. So keep watching your favourite TV show while you reply to the email that just came in
2- View a desktop version of a website
If the mobile version of a website does not render well on your iPad, you can hold the refresh button in address bar for a couple of seconds and you will be prompted to check the desktop version of that same website.
3- Improve your iPad’s battery life
The new iOS 9 comes with two wonderful features that will help you extend the lifespan of your battery and get extra hours off of it. The first feature is called ‘Low Power Mode’ which when activated will disable things that eat up battery such as background app refresh, notifications, automatic downloads…etc. Whenever your iPad’s battery is very low, Lower Power Mode will be automatically enabled. Alternatively, you can manually enable this feature in your iPad’s Settings. The second feature is that iOS 9 now provides you with detailed information of how much battery each app is using together with how much time you were using each app so you can disable apps that you don’t use much.
4- Sketch your thoughts
Use the tip of your finger to draw right in your note. A selection of drawing tools lets you choose different brush styles and colours. And a handy ruler helps you keep things straight.
5- Multitasking features
A- Slide Over
Now you can open a second app without leaving the one you’re in. So you can quickly browse the web, respond to a text message or jot something down in a note, then slide that app away and get back to the one you were using before
B- Split View
With Split View, you can go a step further and have two apps open and active at the same time. Work on a sketch with the reference photo beside it. Or write a paper while copying citations from a book in iBooks. When everything you need is right in front of you, it’s easier to focus
6- Smart Spotlight searches
Some of the new things you do on Spotlight search in iOS 9 include: running simple math calculations and conversions, check weather conditions, sport scores and stock prices, and initiate messages, phone calls and FaceTime calls from contact search results.
7- iCloud Drive new features
The new iCloud Drive app built into iOS 9 allows you to access any file you save to iCloud from just one place — right on your Home screen. Easily search within the app and find the file you’re looking for. Browse all your files by date, name or any tags you added on your Mac. You can also preview and organize your files without leaving the app.
