The choice of the browser you choose to use to navigate the net is definitely a personal one. We are more inclined to stick to the browser we are already familiar with and more comfortable operating. However, if Chrome is your window into the Internet, here are some good tips to keep in mind when using your browser. These are handy hacks collected from Chrome Help to enhance your browsing productivity and help you tap into the potential of Chrome browser.
1- Search the web from Chrome address bar
You can conduct a quick search right from the address bar of Chrome window. Simply type in your search words and hit ‘enter/ return’ key on your keyboard.
If you are using Chrome from your own computer, and as you enter your search query in the address bar, Chrome will display a set of suggested phrases or URLs with icons attached to them as shown below
2- Search from within a page
You can also conduct a quick search from within any web page. Simply highlight the word or phrase and right click on it then select ‘search with Google’.
3- Browse the web in private using incognito mode
Incognito mode in Chrome allows you to navigate the web without leaving any trace of what you have visited or downloaded. Here is how to activate incognito mode:
- 'Open a Chrome window
- In the top-right corner of the browser window, click the Chrome menu Chrome menu.
- Select New Incognito Window.
- A window will open with a gray figure in the top-right corner
- To close incognito mode, go to the corner of each of your incognito windows and click the X.
- Incognito mode isn't available if the account is a part of Windows 10's "Family Mode."
Tip: You can also press Ctrl + Shift + N (Windows, Linux, and Chrome OS) and ⌘ - Shift - N (Mac) to open an incognito window.'
4- Customize your Chrome’s privacy settings
‘Some Google Chrome features use web services to improve your browsing experience. For example, Chrome can use a web service to automatically offer completions for search terms or website addresses you type in the address bar. Most of these settings are turned on by default. You can turn them off whenever you want.
Turn off a privacy setting
- In the top-right corner of the browser window, click the Chrome menu icon Chrome menu.
- Click Settings.
- At the bottom of the page, click Show advanced settings.
- Under Privacy, uncheck any privacy settings you no longer want. When you turn a privacy setting off, that information will not be sent to Google.’
5- Continue where you left off
‘You can tell Chrome to re-open the same pages you were looking at when you quit.
- In the top-right corner of Chrome, click the Chrome menu Chrome menu
- Select Settings. (If you're using a Chromebook, click "Show advanced settings" at the bottom of the page.)
- Under "On startup," select Continue where you left off.
Your cookies and data are saved, so any account you had open before (like Gmail, for example) will open again. If you don't want to be automatically signed in to these pages, follow the steps below:
- In the top-right corner of Chrome, click the Chrome menu Chrome menu
- Select Settings. (If you're using a Chromebook, go to the next step.)
- At the bottom of the page, click Show advanced settings.
- Under the section "Privacy," click Content settings.
- In the dialog that appears, under the section "Cookies," choose Keep local data only until you quit your browser.
- Click Done.’
